Umeå Tingsrätt is the district court of Umeå. It is the first instance for criminal and civil law proceedings. There is about 50 people working at the court and the operation of the court itself is divided into two units, the general unit and the unit for land and environment related issues.

• The trainee will get insight into the operation of how a district court, as well as some other authorities such as the court of appeal, the prosecutor's office and a law firm, works. • The traineeship itself is primarily supposed to act as a glimpse into the realm of law in Sweden, where the trainee will follow court proceedings and the every day work of a judge, as well as study visits to other various institutions.

The language spoken at the court is Swedish. Therefor it is important that the applicant has sufficient understanding of Swedish to be able to understand and follow the operation of the court. This is for both the trainee as well as the court's sake, as both parties will get more out of this traineeship depending on the level of Swedish spoken. This said; knowledge in the Norwegian language is acceptable, provided that the applicant can understand, and be understood, by Swedish speaking people without any difficulty.
